Windows Xp Hangs on Login

PoorBest

Context

Windows XP x64 Professional

Symptoms

On login after entering the user password the explorer hangs up to half an hour in the welcome screen. All you can see is "Loading Your Personal Settings" but you can hear some application starting up (e.g. Skype).

Solution

Delete the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" virtual printer.

If doesn't work on your machine please read bellow.

Method

Reader requirement: power user or above.

I've booted up in safe mode. The login process worked fine. Assumption: some application or service was blocking the login process.

Using msconfig.exe I've removed all aplications from starting up. No effect.

I've screenshoted the service list in order to be able to restore them and afterwards I've set all non-critical services to run on manual. WARNING: the critical services are the ones that still run in safe mode, disabling them renders Windows inoperable.

After 1-2h I've found the faulty service: "Print spooler". Digging further I've pinpointed the problem: the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" virtual printer.

Moral

Get rid of useless junk. Software as well as solid stuff.
